On one of the most enchanting shores of the Aegean lies a hidden treasure: Amos Ancient City, located in the peaceful town of Turunç, Marmaris. This unique site blends history and nature, offering visitors not only a glimpse into the past but also breathtaking views. If you're planning a holiday in Marmaris and want to add a cultural touch, Amos is a must-see.
How to Get to Amos
Amos is located about 24 kilometers from Marmaris, nestled between Turunç and Kumlubük. You can reach it in several ways:
By Car: From Marmaris, the winding but scenic road to Turunç takes around 25 minutes. Along the way, you'll be accompanied by sweeping views of the Aegean Sea.
By Public Transport: Take a minibus (dolmuş) from Marmaris to Turunç, then either walk or take a short taxi ride to Amos.
By Sea: Daily boat tours from Marmaris or İçmeler sometimes include Amos as a stop. You can also charter a private boat and enjoy the bay from the water.
A Glimpse Into History
Amos dates back to the 5th century BC. It was once part of the Delian League and later came under the control of Rhodes. During the Hellenistic period, the city flourished as an important settlement.
Archaeological excavations have revealed structures such as a theater, temples, city walls, and a necropolis. After a major earthquake in the 3rd century AD, the city was gradually abandoned, and today it remains a peaceful archaeological site embraced by nature.
Ancient Structures: Where History Comes to Life
One of the most impressive features of Amos is its ancient theater, which overlooks the sea. With a capacity of about 1,300 people, the theater still preserves its seating rows, stage, and side walls remarkably well.
In addition to the theater, you’ll find city walls with towers, remains of a temple (likely dedicated to Apollo or Aphrodite), a necropolis, and ancient stone-paved roads. Inscriptions and statue bases offer valuable insights into the social life of Amos centuries ago.
Nature and Serenity in Harmony
Amos isn't just a historical site—it’s a natural sanctuary. Located atop a forested hill, the city offers stunning panoramic views of the Aegean coastline. Surrounded by pine trees, olive groves, and wild herbs, it's the perfect place to immerse yourself in nature.
The view from the ancient theater at sunset is unforgettable. Photographers, hikers, and nature lovers will find Amos an ideal place to explore, reflect, and reconnect.
